woman with tooth painThey say that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure — and how true that is when it comes to your dental health! By being proactive about protecting your pearly whites from damage, you can keep your grin going strong. Your dentist is here to provide a few tips on ways you can avoid a chipped tooth in Rockledge.

Be a Picky Eater

We’re not saying you should start turning your nose up at foods that could chip your teeth, but you should be careful when you’re eating them. Some common culprits behind damaged teeth include bone-in meats, hard candies, and popcorn. To protect your teeth, be sure you:

  • Don’t bite into your meat with too much gusto. Take your time so you don’t accidentally chow down on a bone.
  • It’s best to avoid hard candies altogether since sugar is so bad for your teeth. If you do indulge, suck on rather than chew the candy.
  • On movie night, when the popcorn starts to dwindle to the bottom of the bowl, don’t mindlessly grab your next bite and place it in your mouth. First, make sure there are no unpopped kernels hidden in there.

Don’t Chew on Ice

Ice is one of the most damaging things you can put in your mouth. It’s super hard, and chewing on it can spell disaster for your pearly whites. It’s fine to use the frozen stuff to cool down your drink, but don’t use it as a snack.

If you like to munch on ice to cool down on a hot summer’s day, try putting the ice against one of your pulse points, like your wrist or your neck, instead. It’ll cool the blood beneath the surface, and the chilled blood will then circulate through your body.

Don’t Use Your Teeth to Open Things

You know that package of socks you just bought that’s a nightmare to open? Get some scissors or a knife to open it. Don’t use your teeth as a tool; doing so can apply too much force to your chompers, making it more likely that you’ll suffer from a chipped or cracked tooth.

What If You Chip a Tooth Anyway?

Despite your best efforts to prevent it, you might still end up with a chipped tooth. That’s because your teeth face a lot of wear and tear, and sometimes incidents happen that send them over the edge. If you do end up with a broken tooth in Rockledge, you should contact a “dentist near me” as soon as you can. This is important because a chipped tooth can be very sensitive and more vulnerable to infection; you want to get the damage repaired ASAP!

It’s best to avoid a chipped tooth, but if an incident happens, your emergency dentist in Rockledge is ready to help get your oral health back on track!
